Plant communities in Mount compass area – Silky tea-tree Shrubland

Silky tea-tree (Leptospermum lanigerum) shrubland exists in the areas of lower elevation which receives ground and surface runoff from the surrounding hills. Mount Compass lies in the Tookayerta creek catchment where much of the water is captured and stored in wetlands then released into the Tookayerta creek. Ultimately, this water drains into the Finness river to the south east. The images below are captured using Nature Maps to help identify their position with respect to Mount Compass and how they relate to the greater Tookayerta catchment.

Cleland Gully wetlands

The Cleland Gully wetlands run the length of Cleland Gully road following a Tookayerta tributary flowing east of Mount Compass. Part of the wetland is intersected by Victor Harbor road where the newly established Hesperilla conservation park resides.

Myponga – Stipiturus Conservation Park wetlands

This wetland stretches from Stipiturus Conservation Park westward towards Myponga.

Mount Compass – Nangkita wetlands

The wetlands surrounding Mount Compass including the Mount Compass Area school wetland to the south and extending eastward Nangkita. The wetlands follow the tributary which feeds into Tookayerta creek.

Nangkita – Tooperang wetlands

The wetlands extend from Mount Compass – Nangkita wetlands towards Tooperang where the tributary meets the Tookayerta creek.

Mount Compass Southern Wetlands

This wetland extends from Mount Compass Caravan Park across Heysen Boulevard incorporating the low farm land towards Victor Harbor road.
