NatureMaps is an online mapping tool which contains a range of information about the State’s natural resources. It is available for the general public to use to learn and understand more about the physical environment.

NatureMaps is an initiative of the Department for Environment and Water that provides a common access point to maps and geographic information about South Australia’s natural resources in an interactive online mapping format. (NatureMaps | Welcome to NatureMaps).

Information about the physical environment is stored in data layers which appears in the menu bar on the left side of the online tool. By selecting layers and choosing a location, related information is presented in map format.

Case study in understanding the existence of the pre-European landscape

For learning about Native vegetation which pre-existed European settlement, apply the Vegetation layer and select to display Pre-European vegetation landscapes. By selecting an area such as Mount Compass in the Fleurieu, clicking on areas will reveal the type of dominant vegetative landscape. The Department of Environment and Water has also provided keys which allow the interpretation of vegetation. For these keys, navigate to Native Plant Species List, which is provided by the Department of the Environment and Water, Government of South Australia.
